It is a new week here and the 2014 MLS SuperDraft is quickly coming upon us. It is time to get back on the SuperDraft profile list as we look at one player who signed a Generation adidas deal with MLS last week. Today, we're talking about Louisville midfielder Marlon Hairston.
Hairston is a young central midfielder with plenty of upside. His stats aren't going to be something that will jump out at you though. He ended the 2013 season with three goals and two assists. That isn't why the league signed him early to a GA deal. No, it is the intangibles that make him worth the gamble with a GA contract. He is a US U-20 player that really stepped up in 2013 for the Cardinals. His upside and longterm projection makes him an interesting prospect.
Many compare his game to Shalrie Joseph. Hairston can cover a lot of ground on the field and can also be a good target on the offensive side of the ball. He has a swagger about him on the field that many scouts like to see.
Right now, many are projecting Hairston to go anywhere from the late part of the first round to as high as seven or eight. With the right energy at the MLS Combine he could help his stock rise into an earlier selection, having that GA tag will certainly go a long way.
Hairston would be a gamble for a team like FC Dallas but not a bad one if you look at his game. The kid has talent and could be worth the gamble in time. If Dallas does indeed get Oscar Pareja as their next head coach, he could be the midfield destroyer that the club has lacked.
