2013 FC Dallas Broadcast Options

USA TODAY Sports

How to watch 2013 FC Dallas matches in DFW whether you have Time Warner Cable or not.

Last week it was announced that FC Dallas’ local broadcast partner for 2013 is Time Warner Cable. Daniel Robertson’s piece covered the details of this arrangement well, and the comment thread that followed did an equally good job of illustrating fan confusion and frustration.

Long story short, if your cable/satellite provider is not Time Warner, then 22 FC Dallas matches will not be broadcast on any of the channels in your TV package. The only exceptions (per an FC Dallas press release) are the following 12 matches:

Sunday, Mar 17 (ESPN2)

Houston

Dallas

Saturday, Apr 13 (NBCSN)

LA Galaxy

Dallas

Saturday, Apr 20 (TXA 21)

Vancouver

Dallas

Saturday, May 25 (TXA 21)

San Jose

Dallas

Saturday, Jun 15 (ESPN)

Portland

Portland

Saturday, Jun 22 (TXA 21)

Kansas City

Dallas

Saturday, Jun 29 (NBCSN)

Philadelphia

Philadelphia

Sunday, Aug 11 (ESPN2)

LA Galaxy

Dallas

Saturday, Aug 17 (TXA 21)

Portland

Portland

Saturday, Sep 14 (TXA 21)

Colorado

Colorado

Saturday, Oct 19 (NBCSN)

Seattle

Dallas

Saturday, Oct 26 (NBCSN)

San Jose

San Jose

Tomorrow’s match against Chivas is the first road game not on this list, so you have about 24 hours to work out a strategy to see the game. Let’s break down the options:

Time Warner Cable

If you have Time Warner Cable, just tune to channel 148 for an HD telecast, or channel 185 for SD. There won't be any tape delays, and it will never be switched to other channels.

If you aren’t contractually bound to your current TV provider, you could of course switch to TWC, as long as they are offered in your area. I’ve been told that all of Fort Worth is a TWC-free zone, so this isn’t an option for everyone.

Press releases have stated that production values should be higher than previous local broadcast arrangements. There have even been promises of pre- and post-game shows at some point.

FC Dallas Pub Partners

The official pubs of FC Dallas will show every match with sound. These pubs are listed and mapped here. Take note of which one is closest to you.

MLS Live

Every MLS match can be streamed online, and the service costs $60 for the entire season. If you have a strong internet provider, you should seriously consider this option. Along with the ability to watch live broadcasts, you can catch any match's full video or a 20-minute highlight after the fact, DVR-style.

Previously, FC Dallas matches have been blacked out from MLSL in Dallas-Fort Worth, but as part of the TWC arrangement, that blackout has been lifted. This was confirmed by fans unable to attend the season opener who watched it on MLSL.

You can watch games on any computer and there are apps for watching on Panasonic TVs, Roku box, ipod touch, iphone, ipad, and this year they are rolling out support for Android phones and selected tablets. If you want to watch on TV without tying up a computer, a $80 Roku 2 XD is probably your best option for a 1080p HD stream. If you’re not a stickler for picture quality, the LT and HD models would save you $20-30.

MLS Direct Kick

DIRECTV, DISH Network®, or on iN DEMAND can offer a package of every non-ESPN/NBCSN MLS match for $79. Per the MLS website, (LINK --- http://www.mlssoccer.com/direct-kick ) that’s "up to 236 regular season matches and select playoff games, including pre-game and post-game (when available)."

There has been concern over blackouts with this service, but reader @p3pilot Direct Kick on his DirectTV setup recorded the game live last week.

Invite/Make a Friend

Here’s the real opportunity for the bitter to make lemonade out of this situation. Don’t want to spend all the money required for MLSL or MLSDK? Team up with a friend or two, split the cost and have watch parties.

Have a good setup? Invite people over, and share the wealth. Rooting on your favorite team can be much more exciting when it’s a community experience.

You don’t have to limit your invitees to current fans, either. Have you been trying to convince a friend to watch FC Dallas for years with limited success? They’d probably enjoy watching a game with you more than they would coming across a match while flipping channels on their own anyway. In keeping with one of the greatest movements in soccer fandom, offer them a free beer to watch with you.

No one’s saying that a simple solution wouldn’t be better, but no local, widely-distributed channel was offering to broadcast every FC Dallas match in HD, let alone provide additional soccer content and pay for production costs like Time Warner will. If you’re still (justifiably) annoyed by all of this, the comment thread of the original announcement is still open. Below please try to work together to find communal solutions for watching these games.
