FC Dallas Downs Real Salt Lake 2-0, Keeps Lead In Western Conference

USA TODAY Sports

Second half goals from Fabian Castillo and Jackson give Dallas nine points on the season and the lead in the Western Conference.

FC Dallas (3-1-0, 9 points) keeps the lead in the Western Conference tonight after a 2-0 win over rivals Real Salt Lake (1-2-1, 4 points). Two second half goals from Fabian Castillo and Jackson sealed the deal for FC Dallas as they now have nine points on the season and a perfect home record.

Castillo broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when he took a great ball from Jackson Goncalves. Castillo's first shot of the night was his best too - a far post hammer of a shot by RSL keeper Josh Saunders.

Dallas went up 2-0 ten minutes later when Jackson pressured RSL defender Lovel Palmer sent a weak ball back to Saunders, Jackson put a ton of pressure on the keeper who gave a bad touch which lead to the game's second goal.

Dallas dominated the first half in terms of quality chances. Early on Castillo, David Ferreira and Jackson all helped set the tone with good wide play while Kenny Cooper was involved heavily inside the penalty box on a couple chances.

Midway though the first half Cooper had a ball cleared off the goal line by RSL defender Nat Borchers. The build up on the play was brilliant as the quartet of Cooper, Jackson, Ferreira and Zach Loyd all made RSL pay on a counter attack. Ferreira played the ball into Cooper who found Loyd free on the wings. From there Loyd played Cooper in the box who did a quick turn and shot on goal that Borchers cleared off the line.

Dallas had plenty of other first half chances but none were able to do any damage.

Chris Seitz made his first start of the season and got the shutout, the club's second of the year. The shutout was Seitz's first since August 29, 2009.

Few thoughts:

Good on the counter. Dallas had a number of good chances on the counter attack tonight. It seemed each RSL corner kick turned into a fast break chance for Dallas. Jackson and Castillo really contributed to this but Cooper also was a big factor on the counter as well.

Some shakiness against speed in the back. There were moments for matt Hedges and Jair Benitez against the speed of Joao Plata and Robbie Findley tonight that were very shaky. Benitez struggled at times against the speed and against the skill of Luis Gil. While Hedges again had some trouble dealing with the pace of the two attackers for RSL.

Castillo's best game yet. Heck of a game by the Young DP. He had several good passes into the box that were nearly scored. His goal was great but overall he really added a ton to the attack tonight in his 71 minutes. Lots of speed to pressure the RSL back line. He pretty much had the game that anyone could have asked for out of him. Great strides by the young Colombian.

Jackson MOTM. Heck of a game by Jackson as well. Goal and an assist on the night. Looked good on the ball and really created some good chances offensively for FCD.
