2013 Big D Soccer Staff Predictions Part 1

Russ Isabella-US PRESSWIRE

Our amazing staff takes some wild predictions at what will happen during this season. Because predictions are fun right?

Over the past 6 months or so, we've been lucky to add some amazing writers and you'll see two more of them in the next few days taking over our 3 questions piece as well as adding a new game grades feature. With this huge group of writers, I'm breaking the predictions up into two pieces, one that is obviously posted this morning and then one set to post this afternoon. The first predictions will be FC Dallas centered while the second group will be more MLS based.

Please add your own predictions in as well! It's always fun to look back on these at the end of the season and have a hoot.

Our writing staff this year is, in no particular order, Drew Epperley, Brian Wachholz, Jay Neal, Steve Fenn, Alfredo Cuvi, Mohammad Bushnaq, Phillip Long and myself. As always, if you have a recurring story idea and think you can add something to the site, you're welcome to email me at danielrobertson27 at gmail to give me a pitch!

On to the predictions...

1. What happens to FC Dallas this season?

Steve Fenn

Good backline & keeping all year, but midfield & forwards will take awhile to gel. A legit contender for USOC & MLS Cup, but not Supporters Shield.

Brian Wachholz

FCD stays healthy. The defense regains their 2011 form to be top in the league, and the new offensive signings gel after a few weeks to terrorize every opponent.

Daniel Robertson

I think things are much better than 2012 with new depth on the team. There are some worries around the field and I think Dallas could struggle through the middle of the year with international absences, but a 3rd place finish behind Seattle and LA is on the cards. I like FCD to get to the Western Conference Finals and fall at Seattle

Drew Epperley

With a healthy group of starters, FCD surprises many around the league by claiming the 4th spot in the West but lose in the semifinal round of the playoffs.

Jay Neal

If everyone can stay healthy (and after last year what more could we hope for?) I truly believe this team is going to be a top 4 Western Conference team. To make it to the playoffs this year would be a huge victory in itself and validate what Clavijo and SH have done in the offseason.

Mo Bushnaq

FC Dallas ends their playoff drought and enters the tournament as a number three seed. The dream ends in the Western Conference Championship as FCD starts out slowly and is unable to overcome an early goal in defeat.

Alfredo Cuvi

FC Dallas comes out and finishes fourth, with injuries being less of an issue. (let's be positive!)

Phillip Long

The new depth gives the team a needed push to keep the starters fresh and we make the playoffs.

FC Dallas Young Player of the year (Currently under 23)

Daniel Robertson

For me, it has to be Fabian Castillo. It's so tough to look past the Colombian for having an absolute breakout 2013 campaign. It usually takes attackers longer to find their groove in the season and he was absolutely electric in Portland. The final product will come, just be patient

Alfredo Cuvi

Castillo

Drew Epperley

Kellyn Acosta. Kid has all the tools to be special.

Mo Bushnaq

Fabian Castillo. We say this every year but it has to be the year for Fabian. He is still only 20 years old (hard to believe I know) and I believe he will thrive in the super-sub role. Imagine being a defender, playing your tail off for 60 minutes, and then have lightning come at you, fresh off the bench.

Jay Neal

Bradlee Baladez: This kid has the potential to shock everyone this year. He's one key injory up front from being able to really grab the spotlight and become the best HG player we've ever had.

Phillip Long

Castillo. He might be the only young'n to get the playing time necessary. Otherwise I love Top and what he will turn in to.

Brian Wachholz

Jon Top. This is his year to show that he is MLS caliber. He starts off as a super-sub before breaking into the starting 11 as Schellas learns to rotate his veteran forwards.

Steve Fenn

Castillo has potential for a great year, but he'll have to adjust his game to thrive in the 4-4-2. I'm taking the safer bet in Matt Hedges.

FC Dallas Golden Boot Winner

Alfredo Cuvi

Kenny Cooper

Drew Epperley

Kenny Cooper

Brian Wachholz

Kenny Cooper. Rejuvenated after bouncing between clubs, KCJ33 is back home and ready to settle into a goal scoring groove for the ages.

Mo Bushnaq

Kenny Cooper. He edges out Perez because I think he plays more games than Blas and will out score Hassli. Also, I believe Cooper will take the penalty kicks if Ferreira is not in the match.

Daniel Robertson

If we went by goals/90 minutes, I'd say Blas Perez, but Raton won't get the games he needs to grab the golden boot while Cooper terrorizes depleted defenses this summer. Kenny Cooper wins it.

Steve Fenn

Kenny Cooper. He'll get more time and a lot more shots than Hassli & Blas (which he'll need because he's not as efficient as them).

Jay Neal

I would take Blas if not for Panamanian duty (and suspension), but I'm gong to have to go with Cooper on this. I think it's a no brainer.

Phillip Long

Kenny Cooper beats out Blas by one goal because of the two game ban. I see a high scoring year ahead.

FC Dallas MVP

Phillip Long

Matt Hedges continues to grow and turns our defense into a top five unit in the league. Loved him since his first day of practice last year.

Mo Bushnaq

The easy choice is DF10, but I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that the 2013 FC Dallas MVP will be Kenny Cooper. The effect he will have on making Perez (and the FCD offense) better will end up being priceless.

Brian Wachholz

Duh. David Ferreira. Starting a full season 100% healthy and with the Captain's armband, David is ready to remind the league why he can jockey for MLS MVP.

Steve Fenn

David Ferreira. My annual statistical breakdown is coming soon. Check out last year's. http://www.bigdsoccer.com/2012/3/19/2828154/optahunt-the-ferreira-effect

Alfredo Cuvi

David Ferreira, who will activate Toro Power and dominate games (and lead from the front) again.

Drew Epperley

David Ferreira

Daniel Robertson

This is a very tough one as predicting an MVP with so many good players is difficult. If I say Ferreira is going to challenge for MVP of the league then he certainly wins the FCD MVP though right? As an added dark horse, I like what George John brings to the table this year.

Jay Neal

DF10: This year he's going to have more targets to hit besides just Blas Perez. This year could rival 2010 as far as his effectiveness with 2 strikers up top. Honerable Mention: Fabian Castillo. He seems to have showed up with a go get 'em attitude and is poised to have a breakout year.

One Bold Prediction about the season (FC Dallas related)

Jay Neal

IF the team struggles again this year (regardless of the reason) I think this may be SH's last year. He got a free pass last year due to injury but you have to think that two bad years in a row won't be a good thing for the skippers future. If all things go well then I think Blas could have a career year. With Cooper now joining him up top it will spread defenders and let Blas do what he does best: score goals.

Drew Epperley

FC Dallas wins the US Open Cup

Mo Bushnaq

After not sending anybody to the All-Star Game last year, FCD will send three to the big game this season. Ferreira, Cooper, and either John or Hedges.

Daniel Robertson

Jackson is sold to Mexico before the start of next season. There have been teams from south of the border closely tracking the Brazilian in the past as his raw talent is off the charts for MLS. With defenses focusing on other players, Jackson has a good first half to the season and FCD pulls the trigger while his value is at its peak.

Alfredo Cuvi

Alfredo is clearly not one for bold predictions :)

Brian Wachholz

Chris Seitz's form will leave Schellas no choice but to be named FCD's number 1, and he will compete for overall league GK of the Year.

Steve Fenn

Ramon Nuñez will have more minutes, chances created, and assists than Jackson. DR:(Is this because Jackson is sold? :)

Phillip Long

Ferreira wins the MVP. Maybe its not bold, but if he plays a full year he will certainly be a candidate.
