The Earthquakes officially announced the formation of their U-23 team in the PDL today. The team will feature graduates of their youth academy who are in college and will serve as a bridge from the academy to the first team. They are the fourth MLS team to field a PDL team. Details can be found in the link above.
With the talent produced by the FC Dallas Academy, this is something that HAS to happen in Dallas. The opportunity for these players to stay in the FC Dallas system and play together in the summers would be invaluable. A PDL team this coming summer featuring Boyd Okwuonu, Mikey Ambrose, Bobby Edet, and other top academy graduates would be very interesting to watch. Plus it could aid in getting future first teamers more familiar with playing together, as well as possibly aid in scouting which players are definitely worthy of Homegrown contracts.
There is a PDL team locally where I live and the total operating budget for the team is less than $100,000 dollars. A venue for games would not be a problem and the travel budget wouldn't be bad because there are already 5 Texas teams in the PDL in the division FC Dallas would likely play in.
Are there any drawbacks to this at all?
