FC Dallas waited until after Monday's Waiver Draft to make some roster moves of their own by declining options on three player contracts. Former league MVP David Ferreira, and midfielders Ramon Nunez and Erick all had their options not picked up for the 2014 season.
Ferreira and Nunez are eligible for the MLS Re-Entry Draft in December while Erick has not played enough MLS seasons to qualify.
Ferreira has been with the club since 2009, helping guide the club to their only MLS Cup trip in 2010. Injuries derailed his 2011 and 2012 seasons but with a healthy start in 2013, many hoped that we would see the old Ferreira again. Unfortunately, most of the year we did not as his age and health were a question once again. The 34-year-old ranks third in franchise history in regular season assists (39) and is tied for seventh in goals scored (24) with Eddie Johnson and Dante Washington.
Nunez returned to Dallas this past season after spending the last couple of seasons in Europe. He came in recovering from knee surgery and once he got healthy he struggled to find the field with the first team. His me-first kind of play was apparent when he was on the field as he never quite looked the part with the other players on the field.
Erick was a player that FCD gambled on brining in this summer. Schellas Hyndman stated a couple times down the stretch that he might have used him too much too soon. He had flashes that showed he could handle the league play and be the holding midfielder that Hyndman was searching all year for but health and fitness became an issue down the stretch.
Three moves down for FC Dallas and a huge chunk of money off the book with Ferreira's deal. Dallas can either go for another DP right away with that money or find ways to spread it out a little more.
No word yet on if these are the only moves that the club is going to make at this time. They do still have until the end of the month to decline any more options. Also, no word yet on whether or not they have opted to re-sign any expiring contracts either.
