My man Alfredo Cuvi AKA ArchLobster raised a bombshell question right at the start of his must-read MLS recap from last night and I think it's something that is worthy of its own post.
With the season quickly winding down, we find ourselves as the team on the outside looking in. While I personally do not doubt that FC Dallas is a better team than the Whitecaps, it is hard for me to make the argument that Dallas deserves to be in the playoffs
So the question is there. Does FC Dallas deserve to be in the playoffs?
It's a super-interesting one because the 2012 FC Dallas season is pretty unique. The 5-3-3 record of FC Dallas since Ferreira's return to the starting lineup projects out to 56 points through a 34 game season, a total that would not only have Dallas firmly in a playoff spot, but likely challenging for a first round bye.
When you add in the fact that Blas Perez missed the middle third of the season, likely costing FCD a few more points, the 56-60 point total becomes more realistic. Then add in the red card problems which, while clearly the team's fault, is something that probably won't be a problem going forward...suddenly this becomes a team that deserves a playoff spot.
The other side of the argument after the jump
But then on the other hand, as the great Bill Parcells says "You are what your record says you are."
Dallas is a team that went a club record 13 games without winning this year, got knocked out by lower-league opposition at home in the Open Cup and looks completely lost without their talisman Ferreira to lead them. Is a team so dependent on one player a playoff team?
FC Dallas has let golden opportunities to prove their playoff merits slip through their fingers against Los Angeles and Seattle, leaving a 1/20 shot left to make the dance.
And then there's a third line of thinking....
Let's wait and see. The story is not completely told yet and if Dallas finishes 5-6 points out of a playoff spot then it's fair to say it's a flawed team that needs to regroup for 2012, but if they miss the playoffs by just 1-2 points it's very tough to argue they don't deserve to be there.
What side of the ledger do you fall on?
