The Return of MLS' 2010 MVP Sparks a Late Playoff Run, but is More to Come in 2013?
It's the most well-documented injury in FC Dallas history. David Ferreira went down in early 2011, with a return for 2012 looking likely. He saw the field in a couple pre-season matches in Orlando, but some ridiculously physical play for a pre-season tournament saw Ferreira injured again and out for the first half of the season.
He finally made his much-anticipated return to the pitch on July 4 against Toronto FC and nearly created a goal just seconds after coming onto the pitch.
While most expected a Ferreira resembling a shadow of his former self as the Colombian returned to full fitness, no one could have anticipated the impact Ferreira had on FC Dallas.
Dallas scored almost twice as many goals per game and earned almost twice as many points per game in matches with Ferreira, while his return also opened up Fabian Castillo's game more than anyone could have expected.
The best part about all this is that right when the 2012 season had ended, Ferreira already turned his attention to 2013. While Ferreira did clearly fade towards the end of the season after basically running on fumes and adrenaline through his first 10 games back, the 2010 MLS MVP should be back to 100% next year with a full pre-season under his belt.
"The main focus for me is next year," Ferreira told MLSsoccer.com through a translator. "I’m very happy, and with all the hard work I’m going to be doing during the offseason and preseason, I’m going to be 100 percent like I was before. The goal is to get our team to another final."
Could Ferreira produce another 2010-like season and work his way back into the MVP talk? I think it's very possible and with a healthy crew of Blas Perez, Brek Shea, Jackson & Fabian Castillo around him, the offense could be electric at FC Dallas Stadium in 2013.
