Mike Stobe
Veteran defender joining FC Dallas
The second round of the MLS Re-Entry Draft was an active one for FC Dallas as Schellas Hyndman and company selected former New York Red Bulls central defender Stephen Keel.
Keel is an American defender that has been with the Red Bulls for the past two seasons, making sporadic appearances. According to the MLS Player's Union, Keel made $65,000 playing for New York last season.
The Wake Forest graduate played 9 games for New York in 2012 and 16 appearances in 2011.
I asked MLSsoccer.com NYRB beat writer Franco Panizo for a quick scouting report and he Tweeted back:
"Capable contributor. Not great at any one thing, but works hard, gives it his hall and puts body on the line. Good for depth."
So it looks like with Ugo possibly moving out to right back, Keel will be a back of the roster kind of guy that, at a low price, makes sense for FCD who likely isn't enamored with any SuperDraft center back targets.
Edit: I should probably also add that no FC Dallas players were selected meaning Kevin Hartman, Julian de Guzman, Scott Sealy and Bruno Guarda are now free agents who can negotiate with any MLS team they would like.
