FC Dallas News Update Transfer Deadline Day Edition
There's a lot to discuss. Not a whole lot of it is FC Dallas related, but the Western Conference has gotten a whole lot stronger in the last 24 hours.
Former FC Dallas trialist Sebastien LeToux is on the way to Vancouver. This move is a huge surprise and it's tough to figure out why Philadelphia would look to trade their talisman unless the potential move to Bolton that never happened soured Piotr Nowak to the Frenchman. My friends over at Texas Futgol brought up a very interesting proposition with this move, noting that Atiba Harris could likely be bought on the cheap. He certainly fits a need at right mid/forward but I think that would drive some around here crazy.
Just got traded to Vancouver ! Saddest day for me in my Philadelphia Union story.... Still can't believe it
Carlos Rodriguez is on a plane to Frisco right now.
"Me siento feliz por esta gran oportunidad. Voy con mente positiva y listo para hacer las cosas bien", afirmó el zaguero de 20 años.
Kris Boyd, the all-time SPL leading scorer for Rangers, is headed to Portland after nearly joining Houston. You really wonder what went down with this deal that forces Portland to send Houston one of their 2013 first round picks for his rights. Boyd reportedly refused to sign with Houston after visiting the city...which you can't really blame him for. If he doesn't like the heat, I look forward to the Portland at FCD game in July.
"He was born to score," Portland coach John Spencer said. "If we create chances, he's going to be the guy that's going to get on the end of them. He's just a natural born finisher."

Back to Frisco and my boy Jason Minnick has a recap of yesterday's practice
Perez displayed a strong feel for the back of the net throughout the drill, picking out the side-netting behind both posts on multiple occasions. In addition, the Panamanian setup as many goals as he finished. At one point the striker rose above a crowd of players to head the ball away from goal, directly into the path of Ricardo Villar, who struck a hard shot at the near post from the top of the area.
Something to track this afternoon is if George John starts for West Ham in their game today at Ipswich Town. This report by the BBC suggests it's possible.
Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is suspended while Ryan Stevenson could make his debut after signing from Hearts.
West Ham welcome back Matt Taylor who has missed the last eight Hammers game but midfielder Papa Bouba Diop is out with a hamstring strain.
American George John could make his debut while Joey O'Brien returns as does Guy Demel after a thigh injury.
And if Martin Jol almost singlehandedly ushers Bobby Zamora out of Fulham, I will never forgive him.

Agreed.
Maybe with 1 year left on his contract he’s made it clear he’s leaving MLS after the season. Since they don’t seem to be Cup contenders this year even with him, I can’t entirely blame them for trying to get something for the guy. Still weird, though.
Strange that Vancouver would give anything up for another attacker, too. Definitely agree that FCD should try to get Harris (or any of the Whitecaps’ myriad attackers) for cheap.
Interesting story from The Times Herald with quotes from Letoux and Nowak
http://www.timesherald.com/article/20120131/SPORTS03/120139878&pager=full_story
sample:
"The only thing they wanted is the money," Le Toux said. "Being with this team and being a guy, not to build around, but to help this team, was what I wanted. … They must have wanted to sell me for money because they needed money. We don’t have a nice practice facility and that is something they promised since I am here. It’s terrible.
"That’s why they pushed me to Bolton — money."
Le Toux, who does not have agent representation, said he asked Sakiewicz for a pay increase up to the neighborhood of $400,000, putting him just below the league’s designated player status. In the weeks that followed, Le Toux never got an offer from the Union.
dude...
This is turning into a nice juicy story. Drew has a twitter post up as well on wvhooligan.

Vancouver signed another striker today!
Are they going to play in a 3-1-6?!?!?!? I just don’t understand.
This could be the perfect time for FCD to bring in whover they undervalue that capable of contributing. Harris, Salgado, Chiumiento, Nguyen… they have 9 strikers listed on their roster page (some like Nguyen are more wingers than forwards, but still).
Surely a couple are getting shipped out, and they’ve lost some trade leverage by overloading so ridiculously.

where the beer garden is currently, they used to have a huge banner with his image and name. it stretched from the top are where the “php” sign was to the stage area, it’s been gone for a while though, may not recall it?

I don't recall that
but if it’s true, we will probably go after Harris extra hard so we can reuse the banner.
Hahaha.

Oh well
at least I don’t feel as bad about not being able to watch the match now…unfortunately because this one looked very winnable on paper and may have been a good introduction for GJ. I’m sure he is still working on his fitness too, which may have had a lot to do with it.
Really strange that they’d travel but not dress him. Hope they’re giving him a fair chance.

Kris Boyd
First of all, I am thrilled that Kris Boyd is not wearing that ugly orange and playing for the Houston Hitmen. However, since the Scottish striker was on their discovery list, I will credit Houston for not making a deal with an Eastern Conference team, unlike the geniuses in our front office who give Marvin Chavez away to San Jose. First of all, I am pissed they traded him period. A great team-oriented player and by far our most exciting player to watch in 2011. But to trade him to a western conference team? For a future draft pick? That just tosses salt into the wound. Hopefully that Argentinian Nico will prove to be a pleasant surprise for us this year [fingers crossed].
not draft pick, $allocation
Chavez netted them an (as usual) undisclosed amount of allocation money. What we can be pretty sure of is that trade made the Blas signing possible, in terms of cash and international slot.
Not saying the trade was a success. It was more complex than you present it, though.

The trade
is a headscratcher for sure. But then a lot of teams have made headscratching trades…you can’t judge until every move is done. There’s still a couple months of wheeling and dealing to go.

Hello Fennsk1
I would agree with you if they didn’t also loan Jackson and are being told we still have cap room, which could go against what you are suggesting (granted we are both shooting in the dark since the $$$ is undisclosed). On top of that, by losing Avila and Alexander in the second half of last season, we went from being very deep in midfield to having a serious issue on the right wing now (when you do the math…we effectively traded Dax McCarty for Jeremy Hall, and gave Eric Avila away for what? Santos? OMG that was horrid!).
So I understand cashing out a player in order to sign Blas Perez, but given the more recent post here speculating that we still have some $300K left and thus could still add a player, why the hell not keep Chavez in the first place?
One last point to discuss: Chavez and Avila were fan favorites—people were excited to watch them play. I certainly hope Blas Perez, Rodriguez and others provide that same spark, but it seems to me if we are going to fill the roster up with he same number of senior players and spend about the same money anyway, why the unnecessary musical chairs? Chavez was not expensive, and IMO, most quality MLS teams are built on (1) youth development, which we do very well at, (2) roster stability, which we lost last year, and (3) and getting the best bargain value out of the cap money, which is what I am questioning here.
