Be sure to get a copy of ESPN the Magazine this month. FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea will be part of the NEXT issue.
BREK SHEA IS A LEFTY, and true to the stereotype he's a bit different. "He's not one of those guys who walks a straight line," says Schellas Hyndman, his FC Dallas coach. "There aren't people out there who can imitate him."

Hope there's no "Madden jinx" equivalent
Congrats to Brek though!
The was chosen by popular vote, right?
Brek’s fellow NEXT nominees for soccer were:
Mario Gotze – 19 – German national team’s joint-youngest scorer
Ben Lederman – 11 – First American enrolled at La Masia
Sydney Leroux – 21 – Leading scorer at 2008 Women’s U-20 World Cup
Neymar – 19 – Top scorer in 2011 South American Youth Championship; led Santos to 2011 Copa Libertadores
That's an amazing group of names..
…for US soccer fans! 3 out of 5 on their list Americans. They could easily have added AOC, Ream, John, Gonzo and plenty of others too.

to be fair, it's an American site
I seriously doubt The Guardian has written more than 20 words about Lederman or Leroux, and I’d be shocked if Brek or any of the others you list would be in a top 20 up-and-comers list over there.
I love Brek, but Gotze, Neymar, and many other young players in dominant footie nations project to have better careers than every American between the ages of 17 and 23.
