FC Dallas Sending an MLS-Leading 9 Players to US Soccer January Camps

The US Soccer doldrums of December are behind us and we've moved into January which means fields from Florida to California are alive with US Soccer training camps. From the full USMNT down to the U18's, four US Soccer teams will be in action in the first week of January with the USMNT training for upcoming friendlies against Venezuela and Panama, the U20s beginning their preparations for the 2013 U20 World Cup in Turkey, an U19 team traveling to Germany for a unique 6v6 tournament, and an U18 camp in Florida.

Displaying the depth in talent at the professional and youth level, FC Dallas is the most represented club at these four camps with nine players invited to join various teams. Only the LA Galaxy come close to matching this number with eight players invited to the camps.

US Men's National Team

Called up to the US Men's National Team for January Camp as well as the friendlies against Venezuela and Panama are Zach Loyd, George John and Brek Shea. We've known about these guys for awhile with George John getting his first chance to impress Jurgen Klinsmann.

US U20 Men's National Team

Today, Tab Ramos named his first squad for the initial U20 camp as they begin preparations for the 2013 U20 World Cup in Turkey. Named in the squad are center back Boyd Okwuono, who you should all be familiar with by now, Mikey Ambrose, a left sided midfielder/defender, Daniel Garcia, the leading scorer and electrifying winger of the U18 Academy, and Flavio Guzman, a midfielder cut out of the same mold as Victor Ulloa who will be getting his first shot with the national team.

U19

US Soccer is sending a 12-man U19 squad to the Stuttgart Junior Cup, a 6v6 tournament with teams like Lazio, Stuttgart, Celtic and Hamburg. Joining that team will be FCD homegrown forward Jonathan Top.

U18

Richie Wiliams has named an U18 squad that will get together this week in Florida. Included in that squad is FCD Academy outside back Kellyn Acosta.

Could have been more

I think I heard somewhere that Luna, Sanchez and/or Leyva were offered a US youth callup for January, but prefer to represent Mexico. Can anyone confirm which one of them it was?

Google didn’t point me toward any January camp lists for Mexico. Obviously they know about Sanchez, but have Luna or Sanchez gotten any attention for their youth teams lately?

It was Leyva

who turned down a US Callup to stay with Mexico. I don’t think Luna or Leyva will be eligible for the 2013 U20 world cup as they will both be 20 before Jan 1 1993.

Sanchez, you’d have to say, is the favorite to be their goalkeeper though.
