Time To Use Some Reserves?
This question was posed to me Saturday night after the 1-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders. Should Schellas Hyndman take a game, like tomorrow's CONCACAF Champions League game with Toronto as a way to introduce some younger, fresher talent to the mix?
It is a tough call really as it can be high risk/high reward if done correctly.
(Read on for more thoughts on this)
Obvious, each game is very important as we know Hyndman wants to put his best club out there and do well in this tournament. Same can be said for the US Open Cup. And the same can be said for the league games. For right the CCL, it is definitely about getting the points in the group stage locked up. Playing a beatable opponent like Toronto FC means three points should come with your first team players.
My guess is Hyndman and company are hoping to get three more points on the road tomorrow night, bringing their tally to six in the group phase. Typically 10 points is the line you need to get to reach the knockout rounds. Being a little more than half way there with all three home games left in the group round makes sense to put your first team players out there for these early road games, no matter how easy they are.
But with the news of George John going to England, Zach Loyd being banged up, and the heavier legs we're seeing out of guys like Daniel Hernandez, it makes me think do you take that chance by resting these guys for Saturday's MLS clash with Sporting Kansas City or just go all in? The league slate is still as important and with the team stumbling a bit in their recent games, a win in the league on the road sounds almost as important as a win on the road in the CCL.
I looked into who FC Dallas is taking to Toronto to face the Reds tomorrow in the CCL group phase. Only one Home Grown player is on the travel roster, Ruben Luna. Just one. And as for reserves go, there are really only a few on the travel roster as well for this one.
Naturally this is likely to be the same group that is going to KC. I get that. Though I would argue it would be easier to rest a Hernandez at home tomorrow night and have him meet you in KC than have him travel for both. That may just be me.
My one hope is that Hyndman sees he has to use some fresher faces in these up coming matches. Loyd obviously won't be available for tomorrow and it wouldn't hurt at all to rest Hernandez in favor of Andrew Jacobson. The depth is there in the midfield, we know that. But why not bring in an Andrew Weideman or a Moises Hernandez? Hopefully by the time Toronto comes to town for the next CCL game we'll see some starters rested and some of the reserves out there.
So I ask you loyal readers, what do you all think about resting some starters in games like tomorrow's against Toronto?

Well, we’ve seen that 2 of FCD’s expendable reserves are capable of starting for TFC. I bet SH could beat them starting a couple reserves.

Fair enough
But let me ask you this, why do you value this game in Toronto higher than the one in KC?

Not sure about RenegadeRev but...
If we can lock up (or be closer to it) a spot in the next round with two road wins then you do that and rest some players for the playoffs maybe over the next week or couple of weeks. We should be qualified for MLS playoffs by now so the rest of our games should be determining position in the playoffs. As the past couple of years have shown having the bet seed in the playoffs is not generally the team that wins the Cup. I know it would be nice to win the SS and the Cup but I am not sure that is a true possibility any more.
I think FCD’s at real risk of slipping into 4th and losing their bye in the playoffs. Not as concerned about getting 7 pts from 5 games in the CCL.
I say start a reserve or 2 vs TFC, but press for early goals. If margin is two or more in 2nd half, give Brek and someone else 30 minutes off.

spend the money
…at least some of it. Unless Jack Stewart is the best kept secret in the NASL, we’re going to need it. (though I am no longer critical of how FCD has handled the George John situation.)
spend the rest on providing better access to the stadium and other improvements for the club as a whole. Wish Frisco had better rail access – the green line and red line split around DNT. At least our parking is good though.
Sadly, I doubt the club will actually spend the money they’ll get from the GJ transfer until next season. In a perfect world they do it right away but timing is everything and the roster freeze for MLS is rapidly approaching here (Sept 15 I believe).

The only silver lining if they don’t pull together a deal is that the expansion draft will be (slightly) easier to swallow. They only get to protect 11 (and I think GAs and HG get free protection). Shea, Ihemelu, Loyd, Castillo and Santos are sure to be protected. Past that they can protect 6, and by my count there are another 13 valuable contributors on the roster right now. Hope they can deal a winger to Montreal for an allocation or pick with a promise to not pick anyone else.

draft
I thought players on loan are protected as well. If so Benitez , Chavez and Jackson are auto covered too?

No mention of on-loan players in last year's rules:
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/official-mls-expansion-draft-rules
Official wording on some of the nuances:
• Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2010 MLS Season
and Home Grown Players on a Club’s developmental roster at the end of the 2010
MLS Season are automatically protected (Clubs do not have to use a protected
slot on them).
• Clubs are restricted in the number of international player(s) that they may make
available. Clubs may make available a number of international players
equal to their total number of international players minus three, provided that
if a Club has three or fewer international players it may make available not
more than one.
parking
Is fine only until we have full seats and they decide to have fireworks lol. Did you go to the July 4th game? It was a bit of a pain parking.

Try this maybe
hartman
hall – jacobson – ugo – benitez
cruz – warshaw
jackson – bruno/villar – brek
santos
If we are up by 2 or more brek, ugo and jackson hit the bench. Bring in wiedeman(santos), chavez(jackson or brek) and stewart(ugo). This would be my line up going into this game. Maybe replacing santos with luna at some point instead of weideman. Weideman is still a forward(?) i know he’s played some def in the past but not recently that i know of.
The biggest thing I would be looking for on this game is how hall will do and get a look at jacobson on the back line. Maybe even use warshaw on the back and move jacobson into mid.

like your thoughts but....
Santos is not able to play because of being listed on Toronto’s roster for the Champions League. This also means we will not get to see Avila play for Toronto because he was on our Roster for the CL.
Doh!
I completely forgot about that. Simple enough, use Chavez up front or Luna. Marvin may want some rest and we could use him off the bench. Still have Weideman to put up front, perhaps this would be a good time to test him out? Thanks for catching the CCL rule snafu I over looked!
