Miton Rodriguez was a stop-gap measure at forward. Could Dallas go this route again as Ruben Luna is still not quite ready to start?
The fact that FC Dallas declined the contract option of Maicon Santos for 2012 has made it pretty clear the team is looking to move in a new direction at forward. While there's still a chance the Brazilian could be back, it seems likely Dallas is looking internationally for a new forward. Schellas said as such in a recent article posted by Denise Isla in Diario La Estrella.
The question up for discussion today is what type of forward do you think FCD should go after? Of course you could say "the one who puts the ball in the back of the net," but it's way more complicated than that.
The forward that FCD signs for next season could decide whether the team is an also-ran or a title contender in 2012. One school of thought would say that there are other places to spend the money so Dallas should look within the league for a proven forward that doesn't cost a whole lot and would allow Ruben Luna to get more playing time to keep developing. However, this type of player could fail to gel with the squad and be another Maicon Santos leaving Dallas scrambling in the middle of the season for forward help.
There's another line of thinking that says it's time for Dallas to go big or go home and get a DP-level forward. While it would be great to see them spend that type of cash, with a huge contract comes huge expectations and a possibly locker room-dividing figure.
Hell, you could even say if Dallas feels that a player like Darren Mattocks at Akron is the real deal, find a way to trade up and build your roster around him.
Where do you feel about the whole thing? What type of forward should FCD look at?
