Brek Shea Called up to USA, Training at Arsenal

Well this is some very interesting news. Brek Shea has been called up to the US Men's National Team Squad for the European friendlies at France on November 11 and at Slovenia, November 15th.

The groundbreaking news in the FC Dallas release, however, is the news that after his time with the national team, Shea will head to London to train with English giants Arsenal FC as a guest before returning to Dallas where 2012 pre-season will start on January 15.

"Brek matured as a player and as a leader on the field this past season. It was a career year for him," said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. "He consolidated himself as one of the top players in MLS and solidified his role with the U.S. National Team. Affording Brek the opportunity to continue to work on improving his game and measure himself among the best players in the world is something we are all excited about. It’s a winning situation for Brek, FC Dallas and the U.S. team, as the extra training time will help push his game to the next level."

For me, this is really great news for all sides. There's plenty of speculation that Shea will be sold this winter, speculation I don't agree with, and this training stint will expose Shea to the level he needs to get to in order to make it on the international stage.

It's a way for Dallas to give Shea some exposure to a Champions League club, while likely ensuring that Shea stays with Dallas through next season. Great news and congratulations to Brek!

FRISCO, Texas (Thursday, Nov. 3) – FC Dallas midfielder Brek Shea will join the U.S. National Team for its upcoming November friendlies against France and Slovenia, according to the roster released by U.S. Soccer today.

Following the two U.S. fixtures, Shea will join English Premier League side Arsenal FC for a month as a guest before returning home to Dallas in December. The decision to send Shea to train with the Gunners was made after U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann encouraged his MLS-based players to spend the off-season training overseas to enter January camp in top shape.

Arsenal was chosen as the location for Brek to train based on the strong relationship between the two clubs.

"We want to give Brek every opportunity to grow and develop his skills as a player," said FC Dallas President and CEO Doug Quinn. "His goal is always to be better than he was the season before. With an MVP-caliber season in 2011 and his growing international success, we want to get him the challenges and environment he needs to continue improving as one of the best young players in American soccer today."

In 2011, Shea started 30 MLS games for FC Dallas, recording 11 goals and four assists, including a league-leading five game-winning goals and two game-winning assists. The 21-year-old Texan also worked his way into a consistent role with the U.S. National Team, earning six caps and five starts for his country. He earned an assist on Aug. 10 when he set up a goal by Robbie Rogers in a 1-1 draw with Mexico.

Shea is one of 22 players Klinsmann named to his squad for the pair of November fixtures.  The U.S. will first face France on Nov. 11 in Paris. Kickoff at the famed Stade de France is set for 2 p.m. CT (9 p.m. local time), and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN2, ESPN3, Univision and Univision.com.

Four days later, the U.S. plays Slovenia for the first time since the 2-2 draw in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Coverage from Stozice Stadium in Ljubljana begins at Noon CT (6 p.m. local) on ESPN2, ESPN3 and Galavision. Fans can follow both matches live on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and Twitter @ussoccer.

The team will begin gathering Nov. 7 in Paris for the final matches for the U.S. Men’s National Team this year. There is only one further international fixture date between now and the training camp in May of 2012, which begins final preparations for the start of World Cup qualifying. Should any MLS-based players on the roster be involved in the 2011 MLS Cup that takes place Nov. 20 in Carson, Calif., they will be released following the match against France. Shea will report back to FC Dallas on January 15, 2012 for the start of the team’s preseason.

Agreed.

But weren’t you the one about a year ago saying there is no such thing as a training stint with a big European club and citing Gibbs as an example?

There is a chance I’ve imagined this or thinking of someone else.

Oh yes

There is no such thing as a pure training stint.

However I wouldn’t say this is as much a trial as it is an audition. What I mean by that is a trial would cause Arsenal to go for him right now and I just don’t see that as I believe Shea still has some polish to add to his game.

It’s certainly an audition for Arsenal to make a big offer come this summer.

i hope he stays the hell away from Arsenal

he would just rot on the bench there if he agreed to go there ala Adu, Jozy at Villareal, Gooch at Milan, etc etc etc

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

You think?

I’d say if there’s any manager of the big teams that’s show he’s not afraid to give youngsters a shot it’s Arsene Wenger given his penchant to play only youngsters in Carling Cup and giving them many shots in non EPL competition.

If Shea couldn’t make it at Arsenal, I would think it’s because he doesn’t measure up.

yeah...

He would be a Carling cup guy and an off the bench guy. Although, he would fit the play gunners have. To me, Shea would be an excellent addition to Arsenal. He mirrors the play of Walcott for them. He’s fast, aggressive, prefers to head to goal over crossing the ball in (neither are great at crossing anyway) and did I mention, they are both fast! As an FCD fan, I am happy he gets the opportunity to train, sad this means he will most likely leave for them, but as an Arsenal fan, I fucking tickled pink… I said Shea to Arsenal several times earlier this year with friends, just because Wengers love of youth and the style of play just fits. If he goes there, AWESOME! If not, AWESOME, he comes back to fcd that much better.

there is no way this would be good

take jozy as a comparison

Jozy was a better prosepct when he went to villareal than Shea is right now. Villareal is not as good a club as Arsenal. Jozy got almost no playing time and was left to rot on the bench or rot on loan and it significantly hindered his development. Now he’s moved to the Eredivisie and he’s getting himself back on track.

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

I agree that Arsenal (or any huge club for that matter) wouldn’t be ideal for Brek. Solely Carling Cup action isn’t enough. However, I think your comments underestimate him. Like Holden coming out of Houston or Gareth Bale transfering from Sunderland, I think a mid-table team in the EPL (or La Liga) is a perfect fit for Brek. A mid-table club isn’t very likely to pony up an 8-digit transfer fee for a young player, though. The best case is a big club buying Brek with an agreement that he be loaned to a better short-term fit for PT.
Jozy wasn’t an MVP candidate when he left NJ, and Brek has far better offensive instincts and defensive intensity. Jozy was a NT starter at a young age because the Bradley was desperate for striker. Brek legitimately won his spot in a good midfield.
We’re also getting ahead of ourselves because a transfer won’t happen until someone offers at least $10mm, and that’s unlikely in the winter window. The only way he moves before the Olympics is if Arsenal and another club with a healthy warchest take a shine to his NT and training and get into a bidding war very soon.
Brek will probably be in better form for London 2012 if he can keep playing for Schellas and Jurgen over the next 8 months. After he impresses at the Games, breaking Jozy’s MLS transfer record and getting PT in a big league shouldn’t be a problem.

dude

Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. The “young guys” that Wenger plays are either some of the best 17 year olds on the face of the planet developed in top academies (fabregas, wilshere) or they already have years of experience in strong pro leagues like Ligue 1 (sometimes with UCL experience).

Prospects need first team action to develop. Shea should go to Ligue 1 or the Eredivisie and work his way up.

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

I would agree

But that’s not generally how it goes unless one of the big teams buys him and loans him out. If a big team was to buy him, I think Arsenal would be one of the best locations for him.

Amen

I think Arsenal is the only big club in EPL that I would want Shea to consider for the reasons you mention about Arsene giving time to young players, and also because:

1. Arsene is open to loans as well to develop young talent (Wilshere/Bolton, Campbell/Lorient)
2. Team is in transition – selling big stars to develop new ones
3. CL or (likely) Europa competition would be a possibility
4. Lack of a left-footed attacking midfielder with pace to complement TW14 and AOC
5. Potential chance to learn from the best left-footed attacking player in world soccer (RvP).

Most of all, I think Brek needs to consider long-term whether staying in MLS for even the start of next year is continuing to help, or actually hindering his development and creating excessive injury risk (see Ferreira, David and Morales, Javier).

As much as I’d love to see him stay in Dallas, I am starting to lean toward the latter and leaving sooner rather than later, especially after watching our performance down the stretch and the bloodbaths that these playoff games have become.

Either way, this training opportunity will be a benefit to all parties. Good luck, Brek!

like going to the EPL will help his injury risk???

facing thugs like de jong, jonny evans, and alan hutton

MLS is known to be even more physical than EPL,

Shit, more than most leagues around the world. With the way teams play FCD in the MLS, if they played in another league, the opposing team would be down three men.

A man from Dallas who bleeds red, not silver and blue.

by Sir Whirly on Nov 4, 2011 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

just b/c the MLS is less technical than the EPL

does not mean that it’s a higher physical injury risk

EPL is home to these guys:

Win or lose, we'll always be there for you.

Loving this move....

Excellent move for both parties. Shea will come back ready to rock in 2012.
