The FC Dallas protected list for the MLS Expansion Draft has been released. I've got to give credit to our smart readers who predicted the 11 protected players exactly.
FC Dallas has protected: Jair Benitez, Fabian Castillo, Marvin Chavez, David Ferreira, Kevin Hartman,Ugo Ihemelu, Jackson, Andrew Jacobson, George John, Zach Loyd, Brek Shea.
Top candidates to potentially be selected include Bobby Warshaw, Maicon Santos, and Daniel Cruz.
The expansion draft takes place on Wednesday afternoon at 1PM.

one other possible pick
If Montreal doesn’t have a GK lined up (and there are no better options in the draft), they could take Seitz.
Then again, FCD might be one of the 8 that escapes this draft unaffected. I hope they don’t lose Warshaw or Cruz.

nevermind
Lots of decent GKs unprotected, and Seitz doesn’t look to be the most cost-effective of them, so he probably isn’t going to Montreal.
Yeah
Only players I see possibly taken would be Warshaw, Santos or mayyyybe Cruz

Would be interesting if Montreal took both Danny Cruzes
Other teams left a lot of talent out there. Hopefully the red stripes get out unscathed. I’d miss Warshaw the most, followed by Cruz, who have higher ceilings IMO than anyone else that was unprotected. I haven’t completely given up on Santos, but I’m hoping he’s secondary or tertiary at striker even if still here next season.
yeah
I wouldn’t be hurt at all if Chris get nabbed. Cruz wouldn’t bother me too much either tbh, I just wasn’t impressed with him. He has done some good things but I think he has too much of a tendency to float on one side of the field.
My problem with our cam – It’s hard to explain via word here but here goes, our cam fail to check to the ball when our outside backs have it. There is always a circle of space, a pocket if you will, that cam need to check back to to turn the ball up field and swing it around or continue up the sideline. Instead of the cams checking to the space, our wingers do. When our outside guys are checking back we’ve lost any attempt to continue run of play up the sidelines, because what we also fail to do, is get the cam to check into the corners after the wingers are coming back to help the outside backs. Also, imo, part of our flow of play issues and creativity is having a 5th defender. DH rarely ventures past the the circle in the middle of the field offensively, he is essentially playing as a stopper, which would be fine if we were playing a diamond defense. 4-1 = 5 in the back because our 1 fails to join far enough up the field. there is too much space between lines. CDM and cam are not compacting the mid enough to hold control. We do too well at staying wide… odd problem, I know, but it is an issue. Our cam fail to check to the sides and roll into the corners, is the major issue we have. Think about how many times you’ve seen a Benitez or Loyd standing near mid field looking up with nowhere to play the ball nearby in the center of the field… they end up dumping mid range balls onto the too high playing cam and wingers. This disconnect between lines is our major working point in the near future, should we get DF back in and filling these gaps or find a suitable replacement to help, we’ll be great again.
Sorry for my over extended analysis here. It’s lead up to my next point.
Warshaw, I really hope we do not lose him. He’s shown good promise and strong development this year. I hated him early on, I couldn’t stand seeing him on, he always seemed to give the ball away. He tends to do that less, but I like him as DH future replacement. I think he’s got the legs and some attacking ability to move further up the field than DH and help in our attack from a central part of the field, this could bridge the “gap” I was referring to. We still need cam dropping at times to check into space though, they cannot continue to try and play as low lying forwards.
Santos, if all the above pieces begin to fall into place, he can feast all year long with. Currently he’s been stuck chasing balls down and trying to be a creator for us, he’s not a creator like that sadly. I would really like to see Castillo and Luna playing up top together, but that gets into a completely different model of play, which can be saved for another thread.
I was only one pick away from nailing the line up 100%. I chose to keep Santos over DF, but I also admitted to being rather crazy for doing it and knew FCD would not put him out there.
