New York Red Bulls Eliminate FC Dallas from MLS Playoffs
A second half goal from Joel Lindpere and a stoppage time gut punch from Thierry Henry has eliminated FC Dallas from the playoffs in a 1-0 shutout. Plenty of problems from this game and the last two months of the season that won't be discussed by me tonight. This team and Schellas Hyndman have a lot of questions to answer. The season is over for FC Dallas and now the questions are who to retain in the expansion draft and who should not be brought back next season.

So disappointing
Never thought it would end like this. Hard to believe it, but I think the George John almost-transfer cost us this season. We looked more gutless than New York, and if you had told me that in July I would have thought you were high.
I agree
The GJ thing seemed to be a major catalyst for the collapse

Might be a bit harsh....
But Schellas has been far from perfect this season. Why does he insist in starting Jackson up top? Whatever Jackson was doing from the striker position he could also be doing as a central midfielder instead if Jacobsen. Heartbreak really tonight in front of their die hard fans, but can anybody tell me if Schellas is at risk to lose his job? I am not calling for his head or anything, but I think a reevaluation is at hand. We needa dump Galindo and Hall. Villar and Cruz should never start. And we need someone who can flat out score. A poacher who just finds ways to score. Frustrating loss but as a true FC Dallas fan. Going into this one I had a feeling finishing was going to kill us. :(
...
There’s no doubt Schellas Hyndman has a lot of reason to be blamed. We will get into that in the coming weeks.

Castillo, and probably more words than are warranted
Why does SH insist on waiting until garbage time to put this guy in? He’s the fastest dude out there no matter what the minute, how about you put him out there when the mids have the legs to keep up with him so he can lay off to someone? Did we honestly sign this guy only for his ability to play slalom through bad defenses?
I don’t understand why the starting XI is not Fabes/Santos, Marvin/DH/Brek/Jackson, an interchangeable CB/John/Zach/Ugo, KH. Jake is great, but he’s a sub. Ruben is great, but he’s a sub. Ricardo is great, but he’s a sub. Cruz has contributed very little and I don’t see his place on the team. Hall has been mediocre at best, and we don’t need him. We need quality CBs who know their position and can get some real minutes with the guys around him to shore up the defense in the event the starters aren’t available. We need that stacked midfield we had to start the season, not Portland’s leftovers, and we sure as hell don’t need more CONMEBOL strikers.
Also DH probably shouldn’t be the captain anymore. I can’t imagine he’s got long left with this team anyway, but he’s really shown a lack of class over the last two months. Everyone’s been frustrated, but he definitely has not set an example – and I’m not even talking about his playing contributions, which aren’t close to what they were in the fat times.
We need a new.....
Set piece taker. DH has just not been getting it done.
Harsh words
But it’s tough to disagree with any of it.

We are who we thought we were...
… just not good enough. I am left to wonder why when it seems we have offensive weapons that most teams would kill for – Shea, Jackson, Chavez, Castillo. My answer is that those four, while dangerous in terms of speed and 1 v 1 ability, are often not very good at passing the ball (meaning taking part in a string of 3+ quick build-up passes plus final killer pass) and sometimes not good at anticipating where the killer pass will arrive. Yes – the attacking mids (Villar, Cruz) must share some of the blame too.
I am left to wonder who on the team is good at passing the ball on the offensive half of the pitch? Besides Ferreira.
Ferriera
Was the glue that held everything together. Jacobson was too defensive and Villar is not an MLS level player.

My wife’s been in labor the last 34 hours (with still a ways to go), so I only got to watch highlights of the match. Very frustrating, but at least I won’t feel obligated to name my son Brek or Ugo. Since I’m in think-about-the-future mode personally, I’d like to shift that to FCD. As far as I can tell, here are FCD’ concerns going into the offseason:
- a couple strikers – Obviously this is easier said than done, but Gorman and Hyndman have to find a forward with good positioning who can poach a few. Luna could become a legit second striker over the offseason as well, but the FO can’t count on that. Sign two strikers.
- attacking midfield – Ideally, Ferreira will recover by March and drive the offense again in 2012. Also, I think Cruz has some real potential to be impactful once he’s used to MLS. Also, Leyva’s waiting in the wings. Stand pat and this should work out.
- wings – Brek, Jackson and Chavez are an excellent rotation, with Castillo in reserve and Leyva will push for time when he starts playing D. Absolutely the strength of the squad. If Brek’s sold, just target a replacement in the draft.
- central/holding mid – DH and Jacobsen with Guarda and Warshaw in reserve, and Ullloa promising long term. One of the reserves might just overtake DH if he struggles any more with age.
- wing backs – Jair and Zach are entrenched, but rotating Jackson and Ugo here as reserves isn’t ideal. Moises Hernandez needs to step up or they need to trade for a reliable backup.
- center back – George John is out of here, and after Ugo the cupboard is pretty bare. If purchasing Jack Stewart is economical, he’s a nice reserve to keep around, but not much more. Bring in a starter and a backup.
- keeper – no worries. Hartman’s the man, what little I’ve seen and heard of Seitz make him a servicable backup, and between Sanchez and Lambo the long term looks good too.
I didn’t mention Villar, Santos, Galindo, or Hall for a reason. Unless SH sees evidence of great potential from them, they’ve got to be gone. Santos might stick around if FCD can only find one more striker.
To sum up, IMO this team only needs a couple additions at forward and CB, with some reserves being brought in at a couple other spots. I really think that a useful striker will help everything fall into place for the squad.
I don’t think the FO office has been that hard pressed to find useful strikers in the past. Finding affordable ones has been the difficult part. Brek and George’s transfer fees might be coming at the right time.
As frustrating as this team has been, they’ll still lose a useful player in the expansion draft, too. Doesn’t look like it could be quite as bad as last year’s Dax fiasco, though. Looking forward to discussion on this topic after Drew and Daniel offer their input.

Dax
As a DC fan am happy that the Dax fiasco led to us getting DeRo. Was pulling for you guys last night. And will be pulling for the LAGals against RBNJ this weekend. Agree you have some nice attacking talent— though wonder how long it will be till Shea is buying his morning coffee with Euros. Anyhow, congratulations for at least making the playoffs something we haven’t experienced around here in a while.
Thanks
I had been looking but had not seen anything. I was worried because I know that concussions can really effect a players career.
...
Yeah, Expansion draft shouldn’t be a huge issue for Dallas, but it’s definitely something to talk about.
I agree that forward and CB are the two spots to target this off-season. GJ is gone.

As evidence how far my fandom of this team has fallen, I checked the score twice last night and didn’t learn the final score until after noon today. Sorry….I just don’t have any passion for this club left.
why no passion?
I’m a DC fan not FCD but seems like you have a good, young talented team, a stadium that isn’t falling apart, you know your team will stay in Dallas. Good coach. Seems like a lot to build on. Look at the turnaround in fan support that KC has had… couldn’t that happen in Dallas?
Our FO doesn't like to promote in Dallas
So, it’s not well known in the DFW area unfortunately…
A man from Dallas who bleeds red, not silver and blue.
And they like to arrest supporter's for showing up
after the FO said it was okay as long as they didn’t bring their drums or banners. Yup. You can see why we love our team yet hate the people that run it.

no media? no drums? no banners?
man that is rough. Hang in there for the good of the league, the beautiful game. And for a brighter future, ownership and management do change.
It is assumed that someone from one of the Supporters Groups
Lit a smoke bomb at the last game of the season. Local code states that no fireworks or other crap like that are allowed in the stadium. This has been going on for a while and the FO finally did something about it. I am not saying that the FO did the right thing the right way. I am not sure why they arrested two of the people from that supporters group. The other supporters groups had their banners and drums at the game. Again, it sucks that people were arrested, but there are only so many times an entity can continue to let laws get broken at their venue before they have to do something about it. Both points of view need to be taken into consideration.

The thing was,
that they said even though the ‘group’ was banned the supporters could come in. Then they went against it and arrested them.

I need to find out
Exactly what happened with this. I will try. Touchy subject.

This is the first I've heard about anyone being arrested
I look forward to whatever insight you can pass along, Daniel.
must be shooting for rock bottom...
…in attendance if they’re arresting their supporters. Keep it up FO, if you try really hard, you can have even less attendance than Columbus or San Jose.
As for the analysis of the team, fennsk1 hit the nail on the head…almost (can’t understand the confidence in Cruz or the promise Leyva or Guarda supposedly offers). I think Leyva and Guarda are on borrowed time before they go the way of Marosevic…but that aside, the final recommendation was spot on (two strikers and a new CB should be the focus of the offseason.) I might add an AM to backup Ferreira/replace Ferreira if he doesn’t bounce back.
In Coach Hyndman’s defense – he seemed to have already identified these weaknesses at the end of 2010 – and made an effort at fixing each of these problems in 2011 (Castillo, Santos, Cruz, Villar, Stewart, Hall) – problem is, not one of those fixes really worked out, with the possible exception of Castillo, who is still very young. So I don’t think we’re saying anything he doesn’t know already…and accordingly, I’m not in favor of sacking him. Yes, this should have been a MLS Cup/SS/Open Cup/CCL contender season (heck, at least ONE of them) instead of just a wild card into the playoffs and elimination, but I think still Coach Hyndman is the right guy for the job. He earned Coach of the Year in 2010 for a reason.
So I get a call from someone (name withheld) in the FO day of the playoff game...
since I USE to be a season ticket holder they probably still had my number…wanted to know if I wanted some ducats to the playoff game against the RedassBulls…I said sure, put me down for three. I had a couple of buddies who I knew would go with me so I bought 3. He put it on my credit card and told me to pick up the tickets at will call…game time and my buddies drop me off at the gate to pick up the tickets and meet them for a brew across the street..obtw wtf happened to Lochrans’? anyway stood in line for, I shit you not 45 minutes in will call only to find out when I got to the window that they didn’t have any tickets waiting…need I say more…bought 3…haven’t checked to see if my card got charged twice…Hey, they called ME…enough said…had fun with my friends…
